Christmas Emergent Reader

A great way for kids to practice reading is with Emergent Reader books. These are easy books that include sight words and decodable words using pictures. I created a fun Christmas printable book titled "Santa Claus, Santa Claus, What Do You See?" that children can read, trace and color.

A great way for kids to practice reading is with Emergent Reader books Christmas Emergent Reader

This FREE printable Christmas emergent reader is inspired by the Eric Carle classic "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" but is much shorter and simpler. It features some of the things that Santa Claus might see when coming to your house on Christmas Eve.

I see a red stocking.
I see a green tree.
I see a yellow star.
I see a blue ornament.
I see a purple present.
I see an orange gingerbread man.
I see a brown reindeer.
I see a white snowman.
I see my black boots.

There are 14 sight words mentioned in this book, including: I, see, a, an, my, red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, brown, white, black.

The color words are designed for children to trace the word in the correct color, and then color the picture as well.

Directions for Creating the book:
  • Print all sheets.
  • Cut sheets in half along the middle line
  • Put pages in order based on the page numbers
  • Use staples, clips or string to bind the book on the left side

Firefighter Letter vs. Word Sorting

What a great way to practice identifying letters and words with this fun firefighter themed activity! The kids will get so involved in trying to sort the letters and words and ‘put out the fire’. This activity includes a mat and water drop templates with letters and words.

What a great way to practice identifying letters and words with this fun firefighter theme Firefighter Letter vs. Word Sorting

To prepare:
Print as many sets as you need for the number of students in your class. If you are using these in a center, it’s a great idea if you have an extra set just in case you want another group to get started on the activity. Laminate the sorting mat for durability. It’s not essential to laminate the water drops but it is a good idea. I’ve included empty water drop templates so you can add your own letters and words.

Letter vs. Word Sort Firefighter Theme

To guide the students before you begin this activity – show them an example of what they should be looking for to sort the letters and words. I placed the letters and word cards in one pile so the kids will choose one at a time, read it and then place it into the correct column under ‘word’ or ‘letter’. As an added activity, you can get the kids to draw two columns in their notebooks and write the letters and words they sorted. This is great practice!

I’ve included black and white versions of the water drops so you can add your own words and letters and even get the kids sorting and gluing into their notebooks. Here’s how:

Print the empty water drops with four sets on one page and then use a marker to add your own letters and words onto the cards (perhaps using letters and sight words you are working on at the moment). Then, photocopy this paper (1 for each student) and have the kids draw two columns in their notebooks with a flame in each as they read, cut and glue their letters and words into their notebooks and color them in! Great for hand-writing practice as well!

Christmas Sight Words: Find, Trace & Color

Students will love this Christmas themed sight word game. Students will pick a random card from the ‘Christmas Farm Tree Cards’ and read the sight word on the card. They will then find it on their recording sheet, trace and color it. Kids in kindergarten need a lot of sight word reading activities and exposure to help develop their reading fluency. These games are a great way to do that!

To prepare:

Print as many recording sheets you need for the set of students in your class. I like to laminate the Christmas Tree Sight Word cards for repeated use. Use a small basket to place the sight word cards in. These two games can easily be differentiated depending on your students’ reading levels. Choose the second game to use with your ELLs or special ed. kiddos and the first game to use with your mainstream kids. Christmas themed activities are always a hit with my students!

Christmas Tree Sight Word Find & Trace

1. For the first game, instruct the students that they will choose one card from the basket and read the sight word on the card. They will then find the same sight word on their recording sheet and trace it. They return this card to the basket and they keep going until all words have been traced and colored! This is a great way to reinforce reading and writing sight words. As an added element of fun, you can have the kids race to see who gets all their sight word ornaments traced and colored first!

2. For the second game (and this one is slightly easier than the first and can easily be used with your ELLs) the students will choose a card, read the sight word and find the matching ornament with the same sight word and then color it.

This free printable activity is the perfect way to get kindergarten kids to practice reading and identifying sight words. Place the sight word cards in a basket along with some shredded paper to create ‘hay’. Guide the kids to choose one card at a time and then read the word, they will then look for the word on their recording sheet and color the egg. They will continue this until they’ve colored all their eggs. Use the dot markers one of the recordings or both if you like!

As an added extension activity, you can hide the eggs and sticky tape them in different places. They can look for the words and use a clipboard as they find and color the sight words. You can also get the kids building their sight words with magnetic letters. I like adding magnetic letters to any literacy center as there are endless possibilities on how they can be used in literacy centers.

Materials Needed:

Print as many mats as you need for the number of groups in your class. If you are using these in a center, it’s a great idea if you have an extra set just in case you want another group to get started on the activity. There are 14 sight words (7 on each mat) in total. There is a blank editable mat which you can add your own sight words to if you wish! These mats are purposefully made in B&W but the image of the spinner is in color.

Kindergarten Sight Words Spin and Color Camping Theme

Need your kindergarten kids to practice their sight words? Laminate these mats and place it in your reading centers for a quick and easy pull out and play game!

After you’ve laminated the mats, place a paper clip, a pencil and 2 dry erase markers between each pair of players. They also each get one mat (preferably the same set of words). You can place a timer or choose not to depending on the reading level of your group. Instruct the students of the rules or the game; they must spin, identify the sight word by reading it then find it on their mat.

Once they find the sight word, they will either color it or they can place a counter on the object with the sight word. Whoever colors all their sight words first, wins. You can even have pairs of students working on one mat at a time. This will be a great competition between the students!

Editable Snowman Sight Word Mats

Pre-K and kindergarten kids will LOVE these editable sight word learning mats. What child wouldn’t want to build a snowman? Print these mats, add your own sight words on the snowman cards via the PowerPoint file, save as a PDF, print and you’re set to go!

K and kindergarten kids will LOVE these editable Editable Snowman Sight Word Mats

To prepare:

Print as many mats as you need for the number of students in your class – the same goes for the sight word printable snowman cards. You can add LIMITLESS amount of sight words to your file. Just make a copy of the same PowerPoint slide you’re working on and edit the words on the slide. Be sure to save the file as a PDF so that printing is seamless. I find that printing straight from PPT makes the images blurry.

Sight Word Build a Snowman Mats

I LOVE using learning mats – they are so much fun for kids and best of all, they are quick to setup and play! Use these mats to help kids learn to read and identify their sight words. We know that with learning, repetition and practice is key. Kids will be motivated to ‘build their snowmen’ as they read and match sight words. You can work on ANY sight word list you want since this file is totally editable! After you’ve printed and laminated the cards and the mats, cut the snowman cards up.

Place the sight word cards along with the mat on the table. Have the kids start by choosing a snowman sight word card, read the sight word on it and then find the matching snowman sight word card to build their snowman. They can build up to three snowman on the one mat. You can of course, print this mat on a larger A3 sized poster paper to have them build even more at once.
