Thawing a Frozen Heart: Sensory Science for Kids

It's no secret that my kids love Frozen! In fact, their favorite part of the movie is when Anna gets turned into ice and they come to the realization that "an act of true love will thaw a frozen heart". Since Valentine's Day is coming up, I thought it would be fun to do a sensory and science activity where they can thaw Anna's frozen heart!

This activity was so easy to set up, and it was great for introducing my 3 year old to science concepts such as phases of matter (ice/ water), temperature (hot/cold) and buoyancy (float/sink), all while pretending she was rescuing her favorite Frozen character, Anna!

What you'll need:

-ice cube tray

-water

-hearts cut out of red construction paper

1 - First I cut out 16 hearts from construction paper. (however many ice cubes your tray holds) The fastest way to do this is to take one sheet of red construction paper and fold it in half and then in half again and keep folding until you get a square small enough to fit in an ice cube tray. Then you can cut several hearts with one cut. I got all 16 in one shot by doing this.

2 - Fill the ice cube tray with water and add a heart in each space.

3 - Let freeze overnight.

The first thing I did was let my daughter touch and play with all the frozen hearts. This was a great sensory experience and she really enjoyed it!

Then, we tried several ways to thaw the hearts:

1- Putting one frozen heart in a glass of water and letting it sit there. (You can even have one glass of warm water and one with cold water and see which one melts faster)

2- Putting one frozen heart on a plate and using a dropper to pour drops of water on it.

3 - We also tried thawing one heart by holding it in our hands and letting body heat melt the ice.

4 - Another thing that we didn't try but would have been fun is adding salt to the frozen hearts and observing what happens.

The heart that was floating in the glass of water finally thawed and we realized it wasn't floating anymore. It sank to the bottom! Apparently, paper hearts do not float.

Conversation Heart Valentine's Day Printables

There are so many learning activities you can do with those little candy hearts that you see everywhere this time of year. I created some free printables specifically for use with these conversation hearts. This is a fun way for preschoolers to practice counting, patterns, color recognition, and letters while working on fine motor skills!

These conversation heart printables were so fun for my 3 year old that she didn't even try to eat the candy!

Letter and Number Heart Puzzles

My daughter has always loved puzzles. She gets very excited when I come up with something new for her to put together and solve. With Valentine's Day coming up, I recently created this free printable set of heart puzzles for her to practice letters, letter sounds, numbers and counting.

These puzzles include two levels of difficulty:

2-piece heart puzzles:
- matching uppercase and lowercase letters
- matching number to quantity 1-15

3-piece heart puzzles:
- matching uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as pictures that begin with each letter sound
- matching number to quantity, and number words 1-15

Valentine's Day Counting Clip Cards

A favorite math activity with my group of pre-k kids are clip cards. They are so simple to prepare and fun for the kids! These fun Valentine’s Day cupid themed counting clip cards are perfect to practice counting and number recognition skills. They help strengthen fine motor skills at the same time. Use pegs or large paper clips instead.

To prepare:

Print as many cards as you will need for your group of students. Preferable print on cardstock then laminate and cut them up. You can totally differentiate the cards according to the students’ abilities. Use number cards to five with your students who are new to counting and use all numbers to ten with your other group of students. You can also make these cards self-correcting by adding dot stickers at the back of the card to help students check their answers.

Valentine’s Day Counting Clip Cards

There are four cards per page to make it easier on printing and setting up. Now that the cards have been laminated and prepared, we can get counting! The cards have the equation at the top and then three number choices at the bottom. Start by getting the kids to work on one card at a time. I like placing the same number of pegs or clips to the number of cards available on the table so not to confuse the kids while they get counting.

For kids who are working on one-to-one correspondence, it’d be a good idea to make sure that point to each picture on the card and identify it as one item as they work out their answer. For this group of students, they would definitely need some guidance. I would use the self-correcting set with my other group of students while helping the group of learners who are new to the concept.

With these cards, I like using counters or unifix cubes to get the kids to have a go at matching the number of items on the card to show me how they got their answers.

Valentine's Day Addition Clip Cards

Clip cards are a great way to practice basic addition or subtraction facts. There’s an added mystery element to them that make them fun and interactive for kids who are developing their number and addition skills. You can also make these cards self-correcting cards by placing a colored dot sticker at the back so they can clip and check. They are so much fun!

To prepare:

Print as many cards as you will need for your group of students. Preferable print on cardstock then laminate and cut them up. There are 36 cards in the set. You can totally differentiate the cards according to the students’ abilities. Keep the addition to five or ten in one set and use them accordingly.

I find that sometimes, the kids will look for the stickers at the back though so make sure that they don’t particularly know this until they’ve clipped all their cards. 😉

With these cards, you can totally use manipulatives like math unifix cubes or counters to have the kids show their numbers at the top with each card as they clip. Get the kids to have each number in the equation in a certain color. This definitely helps the kids visualise the equation in their minds as they work out their answer.

Practice tracing the alphabet with this fun Valentine's Day themed letter tracing activity, perfect for pre-k and kindergarten kids!

This FREE Valentine's Day Letter Tracing activity features both uppercase and lowercase letters.

To Play:

Place the letter cards face-down in a pile, or hidden inside a sensory bin.
Child picks up a card and reads the letter on the card.
Child finds the matching letter on the worksheet and traces it.
Repeat until all letters on the sheet are traced.

Valentine's Day Number Sense Games

We are deep in the throes of winter, and we're starting to look forward to Valentine's Day. If you're looking forward to Valentine's Day with your tots and preschoolers, I've got a great activity for you to add to your math center.

Valentine's Day Numbers Game

This no-prep activity is perfect for your homeschool preschool activities. All you need to do is print the pages out. Then, your preschoolers are ready for some Valentine's Day math fun.

How to Use the Pages

I suggest printing the pages on cardstock and laminating for durability. There are six different number boards to choose from. If you have children at various learning levels, they can play the game together using different number boards. Or, you can have your child progress through each board as they become more comfortable with numbers and counting from one to six. Have students roll a die and count the dots. Then, using a counter (mini erasers, buttons, Valentine's Day conversation hearts), identify the correct number on the game board.

What's Included

The Valentine's Day number game boards vary in difficulty and skill. On the six game boards, you'll find the following:

standard numerals
colorful number clipart
dot patterns
counting fingers
tally marks
ten frames

Choose the one that best fits your child's needs, and have fun! This can be played independently or in pairs. If a pair of kids is playing, the first child to cover four squares in a row is the winner.

Valentine's Day Skip Counting Puzzles

These adorable Valentine's day puzzles are perfect for learning to skip count. Skip counting can be difficult to grasp so if you have a hands-on way to approach it, this can make a big difference.

My daughter loves puzzles, so if she can do a math activity without only using workbooks, she's in heaven. This means that they're not worrying about writing down their answers but they're still learning at the same time.

Use these printables for little ones who are learning to count up to 20, or skip count by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

Valentine's Day Skip Counting Puzzles Supplies

Print out the puzzles onto card stock or paper, then cover with contact paper or laminate them, this will allow you to re-use them. Cut them up and store each one in a Ziploc bag or container. I like to wrap each puzzle together in an elastic so I can easily sort them out when I need them.

To extend this activity, add your favorite Valentine's day books, make your own Valentine's day cards for a special friend or relative, create a fun sensory bin with pink or red beads and hearts or make an adorable heart craft as a keepsake. There are so many crafts that can use the red or pink theme to add some fun to your learning.

Free Valentine's Day I Spy Printable

Valentine I Spy is a fun, no-prep, printable game that kids will love to play in celebration of this special day. This activity is great for building visual discrimination skills as well as counting and writing practice!

Supplies Needed:

Printer
Paper
Laminator (optional)
Magnifying Glass (optional)
Pencil

I recommend giving your kids a magnifying glass to find some of the very small images, which adds an extra level of fun and mystery to the game.

Kids can use a pencil (or dry-erase marker if sheet is laminated) to cross off each image as they count, then they write the final number at the bottom of the sheet.
