Free Shopkins Sorting Printables

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.

My daughters have recently become obsessed with these adorable collectible miniature grocery store items, called Shopkins. As always, I try to come up with educational activities with characters and topics they are interested in. So I created a set of FREE sorting printables for kids to use with their Shopkins collection, including sorting by color, food groups, categories and healthy vs. treats.

This post contains affiliate links for your convenience Free Shopkins Sorting Printables

A little background on Shopkins. These tiny collectible toys started in 2013 with Season 1 and they're now up to Season 5. Each season they introduce new characters, each with their own unique name such as Kooky Cookie and Posh Pear. The adorable characters range from fruits and sweets, to household items, beauty products, musical instruments, sports equipment, clothing accessories and more. You can purchase packs from all seasons in this starter pack.

Tip: It is way too easy for kids to lose these little toys all over the house. You definitely need a shoebox or some other designated container to store them in. I went ahead and bought this Shopkins collector's case.

If your kids already have a set of Shopkins, use these FREE printable sorting activities, featuring:

  • color sorting
  • food group sorting
  • healthy vs. treats
  • category sorting

I recommended that you laminate these activities in order to reuse them.

Christmas Emergent Reader

A great way for kids to practice reading is with Emergent Reader books. These are easy books that include sight words and decodable words using pictures. I created a fun Christmas printable book titled "Santa Claus, Santa Claus, What Do You See?" that children can read, trace and color.

A great way for kids to practice reading is with Emergent Reader books Christmas Emergent Reader

This FREE printable Christmas emergent reader is inspired by the Eric Carle classic "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" but is much shorter and simpler. It features some of the things that Santa Claus might see when coming to your house on Christmas Eve.

I see a red stocking.
I see a green tree.
I see a yellow star.
I see a blue ornament.
I see a purple present.
I see an orange gingerbread man.
I see a brown reindeer.
I see a white snowman.
I see my black boots.

There are 14 sight words mentioned in this book, including: I, see, a, an, my, red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, brown, white, black.

The color words are designed for children to trace the word in the correct color, and then color the picture as well.

Directions for Creating the book:
  • Print all sheets.
  • Cut sheets in half along the middle line
  • Put pages in order based on the page numbers
  • Use staples, clips or string to bind the book on the left side

This FREE Penguin Color Matching activity is great for learning about colors and reading color words. After matching the hats to the correct color, kids can try doing it the "wrong" way by mixing up the colors to create different outfits.

Penguins and clothing comes in 11 colors: red, yellow, blue, orange, green, purple, pink, black, white, brown, gray.

I recommend that you laminate all the pages, then cut out the penguin cards and hats. Use transparent velcro dots to make it easy for kids to attach the hats to each penguin.

Kangaroos are amazingly unique animals that are Marsupials. Marsupial means they raise their babies in pouches till they are old enough to fend for themselves. There are several different Marsupial species such as koalas, possums, and wombats.

Inside this PDF you will find upper and lower case letters, colors, shapes, and numbers to match. You can also find a Where is my Momma? matching activity here!

Matching upper and lower case letters: The mother kangaroo has the upper case letters while the joey has the lower case letters. You could also use them for the children to spell out their name. You may have to print out a couple pages twice depending on your child's name. You can find more alphabet practice fun here.

Numbers: The mother has the number word while the joey has the number.

Colors: The mother again has the word on her pouch while the joey has the color.

Shapes: The mother has the shape name while the joey has the shape.

Instructions: Print out the PDF. Laminate if you choose. It is a pretty large pack. It might be better to cut out the different kangaroos and then laminate them closer together. You could save some lamination paper that way. Fold the mother kangaroo in half and cut across the dotted line forming the pouch. Have the child slide the correct joey into his/her momma's pouch.

Fast Facts about Kangaroos:
  • Kangaroos are vegetarian animals who hop to get around.
  • Kangaroo mothers have a pouch on their tummy that their little joeys (which is what baby kangaroos are called) stay in till they develop enough to survive on their own.
  • Did you know joeys stay in their mother's pouches for around 8 months and then they only venture out for short time periods? They don't fully outgrow their mother's pouches till around 10 months. The joey will still stay close to momma but sometimes may go exploring.

Ways to Play

You can do this activity in several different ways depending on the age and skill level of your child.
  • For young toddlers, start with the "red, yellow, blue" mat and do only 1 mat at a time. Talk about the things you see in each picture.
  • For older toddlers and preschoolers, give 2 or 3 mats at once and mix up the pieces. Ask the child to identify each picture as they sort by color.
For best results, turn into a reusable game by laminating the mats and pieces, and use velcro dots to attach the pieces.
