Pot of Gold Math Game for St. Patrick's Day
A great way to teach number recognition and addition is to play "roll and cover" math games. Here is a fun St. Patrick's themed game, although it can be played at any time of the year. All you need is "gold coins" (see affiliate link below) or you can use anything else like playdough or pom poms.
This Pot of Gold Roll & Cover game includes 2 levels of difficulty:
For younger children and toddlers, use the first page with numbers 1-6 and a single die. Roll the die and place a "gold coin" on top of the correct number. This can be played with multiple players or just one.
The second page is a more advanced version, which is great for learning addition. It includes numbers 2-12 and you roll two dice, add the numbers together, and place a "gold coin" on top of the correct number.
Reading a regular die can be hard for young children, so I have included a printable paper die that is larger and easier to count the dots. You can also find larger dice at a dollar store or through my affiliate link below.
Silly McGilly: St. Patrick's Day Toy & Book Review + Giveaway!
I am thrilled to share my review of Silly McGilly, a wonderful St. Patrick's Day tradition. This is an adorable book and toy set, featuring Silly, a funny leprechaun who likes to play "tricks" during the days leading up to St. Patrick's Day. Silly is fun and educational for the home or classroom!
The makers of Silly McGilly were kind enough to offer a FREE set to one "lucky" family. Enter the Giveaway at the bottom of this post for your chance to win.
Disclosure: I was given a complimentary set as well as compensation for my time and effort to review this product. All opinions are my own and I was in no way required to write a positive review.
I have two daughters - a 4 year old and a 2 1/2 year old, and they both instantly loved Silly as soon as we opened up the box. Both the 8" toy and the 8.5" x 8.5" book are made of high quality materials. If you choose the keepsake box option, it comes in a very sturdy and colorful box with 2 compartments, so everything can be easily packed away for next year's St. Patrick's day, or it can be given as a gift.
After opening the box, I immediately read the book to my eager daughters. The beautifully illustrated book tells Silly's story about what leprechauns are, where they come from, and how they like to play tricks during the St. Patrick's Day season. Silly McGilly enjoys going to children's homes and playing tricks while they are sleeping. All you have to do is place the Silly McGilly toy next to a window at night and that is the invitation for the "real" Silly to come visit the family's house. When you wake up, see what tricks he was up to!
In our house, Silly did a combination of tricks as well as educational activities. My kids were completely amazed when he turned the toilet water green, or when he turned all the family photos upside down. They also thoroughly enjoyed it when he left activities for them to do. (Tip: Silly McGilly's website has many printable activities such as coloring pages, treasure hunt, rhymes, mad libs and more!)
The tricks and activities you can do are endless, but there are tons of ideas in the Silly McGilly book and the Silly McGilly website that can be done with kids at home or in the classroom.
Ideas for Tricks:
-turn toilet water green
-turn breakfast foods green
-hang all the pictures on the wall upside down
-switch shoelaces with green ones
-tape Silly's own picture over a family photo
-switch around all the children's name tags
-leave chocolate coins in shoes
-leave green goodies in lunchbox
Ideas for Activities:
-leave coloring pages of Silly McGilly with only green crayons or markers to color
-treasure hunt with clues leading up to a treat of chocolate coins
-scavenger hunt with a list of items that Silly hid around the house
-leave behind materials for a St. Patrick's Day craft
-leave shamrock cut-outs to be used for learning games
-leave a St. Patrick's Day puzzle to be solved
Silly McGilly can be purchased at http://www.sillymcgilly.com/.
For a chance to win a FREE set, enter the giveaway below. A random "lucky" winner will be selected, and they will get their set just in time for the St. Patrick's Day season. (Please note: the giveaway is only open to U.S. residents)

Rainbow Counting Puzzles
It’s essential to help kids build a strong math foundation with fun hands-on activities. This activity can be used to teach preschoolers number sense, counting and work on their 1-to-1 correspondence by counting objects and understanding that 1 object = 1 (numeral). This activity helps them do this by matching the number of dots shown on the dice (no matter how they are positioned) to the number of dots on the matching puzzle piece.

Print as many cards as you will need for your group of students. Preferably print on cardstock, then laminate and cut them up. There are 24 cards in the set, both in color and black/white. You can totally differentiate the cards according to the students’ abilities. Use the cards with numbers to 5 with your beginning students and the others for your more capable students.
Counting with Dice Rainbow Puzzle Cards
This free resource is a perfect way to introduce preschool students to counting. To prepare you will simply need to print these cards in color on cardstock then laminate them. Cut up the rainbow puzzles according to the dashed lines given. Prepare to show the kids that they need to make a rainbow so have them pick a rainbow card puzzle with a die on it. Show them how to count the dots on the die to find out what number they need to look for. After they count they will find the matching puzzle piece with the same number of dots in it. They continue this until they’ve completed all puzzles. 😉
With these cards, you can totally use manipulatives like math unifix cubes or counters to have the kids show their numbers at the top with each card as they make their puzzles.

Free St. Patrick's Day I Spy Printable
St. Patrick's Day I Spy is a fun, no-prep, printable game that kids will love to play in celebration of this special day. This activity is great for building visual discrimination skills as well as counting and writing practice!
This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.
Supplies Needed:
- Printer
- Paper
- Laminator (optional)
- Magnifying Glass (optional)
- Pencil
I recommend giving your kids a magnifying glass to find some of the very small images, which adds an extra level of fun and mystery to the game.
Kids can use a pencil (or dry-erase marker if sheet is laminated) to cross off each image as they count, then they write the final number at the bottom of the sheet.
St. Patrick's Day Rhyming Puzzles
Rhyming is an essential skill for emergent readers to develop. These fun St. Patrick’s Day themed printable puzzle cards are just the perfect addition to any preschool and kindergarten classroom. The kids will enjoy matching the ‘owl’ to the ‘pot of gold’ by finding the matching rhyming word.
As an added extension activity, you can get the kids building their matching rhyming words by using magnetic letters. They build and place them on top of each card. This is great practice as they get to practice working on their short vowel CVC sounds as well. I like adding magnetic letters to any literacy center as there are endless possibilities on how they can be used in literacy centers.

St Patrick’s Day Rhyming Puzzle Cards
This free printable activity is the perfect way to get preschoolers and kindergarten kids to practice their rhyming skills. To prepare you will simply need to print these cards in color on cardstock then laminate them. You also have the option of printing them in black and white but color is preferred. Cut the puzzles so that you have a pile of ‘owl cards’ in one and ‘pot of gold’ cards in another. Show an example with the kids by pulling out an ‘owl card’ and naming the object on the card like ‘lip’ then instruct the students to find the matching rhyming word in the ‘pots of gold’. They will then look for an object that rhymes with ‘lip’. They will continue this until they matched all their cards. 😉

Lucky Letters St. Patrick's Day ABC Game
Are you working on letters with your preschoolers? Letter recognition and beginning sounds? These little leprechauns are here to help! Preschoolers will love playing Lucky Letters in a group setting or individually. This low-prep activity is quick and easy to set up so you'll be all ready to go in time for St. Patrick's Day.
Have preschoolers choose a leprechaun card and name the featured letter. Ask them to find the matching letter on the game board and color or cover it. Then, have them say it's sound.
Continue in this manner until all of the shamrocks have been colored or covered.
There are many ways to use these cards and game boards. And, all of them are perfect for the month of March!
Leprechaun Letter Recognition Game
I suggest printing the game boards on regular printer paper so kids can color the shamrocks. Or, you could laminate them and use small counters (buttons, erasers, etc.) to cover the shamrocks instead of coloring them. Print the leprechaun cards on cardstock and laminate for durability. Then, cut the letter cards apart. That's it! You're all set for some Lucky Letters fun. Choose a game board - uppercase or lowercase - and the corresponding leprechaun cards. Turn the leprechaun cards face down.
Have preschoolers choose a leprechaun card and name the featured letter. Ask them to find the matching letter on the game board and color or cover it. Then, have them say it's sound.
Continue in this manner until all of the shamrocks have been colored or covered.
You can mix things up once your kids are comfortable with this basic game. Give kids a game board and the opposite set of letter cards. This will help them match uppercase and lowercase letters. You could also have them put the cards in ABC order before searching for the matching shamrocks on the game board.
There are many ways to use these cards and game boards. And, all of them are perfect for the month of March!
