The Way Babies Learn

Research shows that the first five years of a child's life is the most critical period for brain development. In this period, brain cells make connections that lay the foundation for all future learning. These pathways must be maintained, through repetition and consistency, in order for the connections to be preserved. The network of connections influences intellectual capacity, memory, problem solving, and language. Most of these connections are made in early childhood, especially in the first year of life.

Starting from birth, the most important thing a parent can do is to interact with their baby as much as possible. You are your child's best teacher. A baby's brain is designed to learn best from human interaction. Experts recommend talking to your baby a lot. The more that a baby hears the patterns of language, the easier language learning becomes. By age 3, kids spoken to more frequently have an IQ that's 1.5 times higher than that of children who weren't. By the time they're in elementary school, they have much stronger reading, spelling, and writing skills. You should narrate your day, meaning talk about everything you are doing and everything that is happening. Once your baby starts babbling, you should have "conversations" with the baby. Ask the baby a question then pause and wait for a reaction. This kind of interaction will help to develop social and emotional skills. It is also recommended that parents read to their child every day, starting from birth.

Infant Stimulation Cards (newborns - 5 months):

Because vision is one of the least developed senses at birth, it is a good idea for the parent to offer stimulating images to aid in the baby's development. At birth, a baby’s retina is not fully developed. An adult retina can distinguish many different shades of light and color, but a newborn retina can only detect large contrasts between light and dark, or black and white. I used to notice my baby staring at high contrast objects such as the dark framed mirror or the dark curtains up against a white wall.

Infant stimulation cards are black and white patterned cards that you hold up in front of your baby as a visual stimulation tool. Research shows that infant stimulation cards will help calm and soothe your baby as well as increase concentration skills, enhance natural curiosity and stimulate the creation of brain cell connections.

The best distance to place the card is 8 to 12 inches from your baby's eyes. You can tape it to the side of the crib, the wall next to the changing table, in front of your car's baby seat, or just show it to your baby and let the baby look at it until he/she loses interest. These cards are good for newborns up to around 5 months. Make sure baby is alert and active while showing these cards.

Baby Flash Cards (5 months and up):

The free infant stimulation cards in this post are no longer available Teaching Tools for Babies

Once your baby starts to stay awake and alert for longer periods, around 5 months, a daily exercise you can do is to use flash cards to aid learning. You can download free alphabet flash cards A-Z and numbers 1-10, click here! These high contrast black and white images are better than other colorful cards. Flash each card for a second while saying the letter sound. This exercise should last no longer than a minute for the whole set of cards. Do this while your baby is alert and in a high chair or seat. Consistency is the key, so if you do this every day you will significantly impact your child's reading potential. The child will quickly learn the letter sounds which is the first step in learning to read phonetically. Give your baby a head start in reading!

Your baby will also learn to recognize numbers by using the number cards. You should also try to count things in every day conversation. Count the baby's fingers and toes, count the number of steps in your staircase, etc. Soon the baby will be counting everything too!

Note: Teaching your infant with flash cards should not be time consuming and should always be fun. To be used in addition to lots of meaningful interaction and play with your baby. If your baby is not interested, try again at a later time. Also, if you do not start at 5 months, don't worry it is never too late to start. Your child will benefit regardless.

Alphabet Sorting Game with Free Printable

I'd like to share a fun picture sorting activity that I do with my daughter to help her learn letter sounds. This also builds alphabet awareness and vocabulary!

d like to share a fun picture sorting activity that I do with my daughter to help her Alphabet Sorting Game with Free Printable

For each letter of the alphabet there are 6 cards: four cards with pictures of objects, one card with the uppercase letter and one with the lowercase letter. That's a total of 156 cards.

All you need is a few baskets, cans or containers and you label each container with a letter of the alphabet.

Depending on your child's age and skill level you can choose how many letters to do at a time. I recommend only doing 2 or 3 letters at one time for beginners. You can also add challenge by using letters that are not in alphabetical order, example x, m, and r.

Teach Letter Sounds with 26 Photos

I had the amazing opportunity to write a guest post for Teach Mama Teach Letter Sounds with 26 Photos

I had the amazing opportunity to write a guest post for Teach Mama! So I decided to share this super cool and fun activity for learning letters and letter sounds. It's actually multiple activities in one, and it was a huge hit with my daughter!

M is for Monster: Craft & Activity

Teaching my daughter letters has been a bit of a challenge M is for Monster: Craft & Activity
This post is sponsored by Dollar Tree. All opinions are my own.

Teaching my daughter letters has been a bit of a challenge. It's just not something that interests her. So I have to get really creative these days to come up with projects that are so fun, she forgets she is learning! Luckily, I got the opportunity to make this awesome project from the Dollar Tree Value Seekers Club! After we made this adorable Monster box craft, I came up with a fun little game to practice letter recognition and letter sounds!

Teaching my daughter letters has been a bit of a challenge M is for Monster: Craft & Activity

To create this Monster box craft, you will need the following supplies:

  • tissue box (Dollar Tree)
  • paint (optional)
  • circle labeling stickers (Dollar Tree)
  • construction paper (Dollar Tree)
  • googly eyes (Dollar Tree)
  • tape or glue (Dollar Tree)

The instructions for making this Monster box can be found at the Dollar Tree Value Seekers Club. Membership is completely FREE! You'll find tons of crafts, recipes, décor, tips, contests, insider information, and frugal ideas. The content changes every month, so you'll have lots of fresh ideas for each season, holiday or just every day fun! All the materials can be purchased from Dollar Tree, and you can even print out the project sheets to take with you to the store as a convenient shopping list!

This Monster box was such a cute craft, and super easy for a toddler or preschooler to make. (I helped with the eyes and teeth, but that's about it)

As we were making the Monster, I told my daughter that this Monster likes to eat only letter M's and things that begin with M. It won't eat anything else that begins with a different letter or sound! Those "rules" set us up for some fun activities!

For the first activity, I took out some letter stickers that I had in my craft supplies. But you can also use letter tiles, letter magnets, or any other moveable alphabet pieces that you have on hand.  Fortunately, we had a lot of letter M's, so I gave my daughter a bunch of letters to feed to the Monster (about half of them were M's and half were other letters). She took one letter at a time, called out what the letter was, and determined whether the Monster would eat it or not. This is a great game for letter recognition and can be modified depending on what materials you have!

Teaching my daughter letters has been a bit of a challenge M is for Monster: Craft & Activity

For the next game, I collected a bunch of small objects and toys from around the house. I tried to find as many things as I could that start with the M sound. I found a mirror, a mitten, a monkey toy, play money, a marker, Minnie mouse, a small map, a mouth and a moon. I also added a bunch of other small objects that don't begin with an M sound. One by one, she identified each object and if that object started with an M sound or not, and fed the correct ones to the Monster.

Teaching my daughter letters has been a bit of a challenge M is for Monster: Craft & Activity

This game can be modified for a lot of different learning activities, whether you want your child to practice letters, numbers, sight words, colors, etc.

School Bus Sorting Game with Post-it Notes

for kids to practice and brush up on different concepts before they start school again School Bus Sorting Game with Post-it Notes

My daughter has been begging me for several weeks to make a Wheels on the Bus game, so I figured it would be perfect for Back to School for kids to practice and brush up on different concepts before they start school again.

I wanted to make this a customizable game that kids of different ages and skill levels can use as a fun learning activity, so I decided to use Post-it Notes! This makes it extra fun for kids because they will love to peel and stick these colorful pieces of paper.

You can use this game to practice color recognition, letters, numbers, sight words, shapes, word families or pretty much anything else that can be sorted. All you need is this Free printable school bus and 5 pads of 3"x3" Post-it Notes!
