Download your FREE School Bus Addition Mats at the bottom of this post!

This activity includes 2 addition mats, one with ten frames for sums up to 10, and one with 20 frames for sums up to 20. The 10-frame mat is best for kids just starting to add numbers.

Supplies Needed:
Instructions:

There are many ways to use these mats. Teachers/parents can give the child a set of addition problems to solve, or you can leave it up to the child to use the mat in a more open-ended way and make their own equations.

I recommend using 2 different colored counters (one for each quantity being added) and 3 different colored dry-erase markers (one for each number being added and another color for the sum) Make sure the colors on the equation match the counters. This will provide a visual diagram for the child and help them understand the concept of addition.

Instead of using counters, kids can also use dry-erase markers to draw circles in the frames.

Zap Zap Kindergarten Math App

I had the wonderful opportunity to try out a brand new mobile app, Zap Zap Kindergarten Math, with my 5 1/2 year old daughter who just finished kindergarten. I wasn't sure how she was going to like it because she is very picky with games and often loses interest if they are too educational. It turns out she loves it and has asked to play the app every day since we downloaded it! I gladly let her, because this app is a great summer review tool for the math skills she's acquired in kindergarten, but it is also challenging enough that I know she's learning and building upon the concepts she knows. Watch the video below for an introduction!

What's Great About Zap Zap Kindergarten Math App

  • Adorable graphics with a cool space theme that will keep kids engaged. (Girls will love it too!)
  • Aligned with the Common Core Standards for Kindergarten Math
  • No ads or third-party content
  • Parents/teachers can track child's progress for each game level and skill.
  • Unique adaptive feature that adjusts the difficulty level of each game depending on the player's abilities.

Skills Practiced in Zap Zap Kindergarten Math App

  • Number sense & number recognition
  • Reading number words
  • Counting to 100 by 1's and 10's
  • Counting forward and backwards
  • Comparing numbers: greater than, less than, equal to
  • Identify and sort shapes, both 2D and 3D
  • Comparing objects by height, weight, length, etc.
  • Measurement
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Number bonds
  • and more!

My Recommendation to Parents & Teachers

Start out by exploring the app together with your child/student and making sure they understand the basic navigation. Children can play the app independently for the most part. My daughter asked me for help in understanding some of the game instructions and a few of the touch-screen requirements. However, they do a great job of including visual, verbal and written instructions for every level, so children will catch on quickly.

The Zap Zap Kindergarten Math app would be a fantastic addition to your kindergarten math curriculum, in a math center, or at home as a fun and playful supplement to your child's learning. It is also perfect for summer learning, with its portable nature making it great for traveling.

Train Number Games and Worksheets for Kindergarten

Trains never seem to go out of style. My kids have loved trains since they were toddlers and they still love them. The interest in trains is certainly different but trains are still a hot topic. And it is the perfect theme for learning. If your kids love trains, they'll certainly enjoy this Train Teen Number Challenge.

How to Set Up the Train Ten Frame and Teen Numbers

Print the trains and numbers on cardstock or laminate the pieces so they will last through heavy use. I've found that my kids love playing with sets like these over and over again so I try to make them durable enough to last. Make sure to print the black and white and the color versions. One has numbers and the other features ten frames. Both forms are useful!

How to Use the Train Ten Frame and Teen Numbers

The initial idea is to put them in order. The numbers range from 10 to 20 but you can cover whichever numbers are necessary. I found my kids have the most trouble with 12, 13, and 14. All of them seemed to get stuck there!

Once you've put them in order, try matching up the ten frames. Ten frames are commonly used as a way of visualizing math. But the first step is getting used to them. Hopefully when given enough practice they will notice that the top frame is always 10. They do not have to start by counting to 10 every time. They can start at 10 and just count up from there!

There are many more ways to use the train numbers.
  • Pick one number and have them find the next largest and next smallest number
  • Pick two numbers and have them compare the numbers
  • Play a matching game with the numbers and the ten frames
  • Line up all the cards in order then flip one over. Have them figure out the missing number
  • Do all of these activities but with the ten frame cards instead

I've added a few additional pages to go along with the number cards. First is a set of number writing pages. Practice writing the teen numbers and match them with the ten frames Then there is a matching Dot Marker page to go with the numbers too. Simply dot the train tickets based on the number.

I hope you enjoy these train themed printables!

My boys would halt at math if they had to worry about writing down the answers. So, for awhile, I'd write their answers for them. These puzzles are perfect as you ease back out of the lazy days of summer. We've spent the summer keeping up our math skills with games and hands-on activities rather than book work.

The animal addition puzzles go up to 10 with 2 puzzles for each number except for 0 and 1. I want my child to see that a number can be made up of different parts so you can use 1+3 or 2+2 to make 4.

Animal Addition Puzzles Supplies

Print out the puzzles onto paper or card stock if you'd like them to be more durable. If you'd like them to last, I suggest you laminate them or cover them in contact paper. Then cut them up along the dotted lines, now they are ready to use. Store these puzzles in ziploc bags to be able to use them again.

To extend this activity, read your favorite animal books and create a craft based on the book. Those are my favorite activities to do. Grab some plastic animals and sort them based on their habitats or diets. Make your own animal sensory bin with rice or beans and throw in their favorite animals. Add some movement to your day and have them imitate their favorite animals to see if you can guess what they are.

My daughter is often seen with her stuffed animals and these puzzles are a perfect way to bring animals into her learning environment.

Skip Counting Worksheets

This FREE printable Superhero Skip Counting pack includes 9 worksheets and 1 puzzle to practice skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's while helping the superheroes rescue the mayor and save the day!

There are 2 versions - color and black & white. The black & white version is great for kids who love to color.

Learning to Skip Count

For kids who are learning to skip count, I find that teaching using a hundreds chart can be very useful. (There is a FREE hundreds chart at the bottom of this post that you can download. You can also purchase a larger chart here, or a set of 10 charts here.)

Use counters or any small objects to cover the numbers that are being skipped. For example, the first picture below shows how to skip count by 5's.

My daughter had the most trouble with skip counting by 3's. So I showed her how to skip over two numbers at a time on the hundreds chart. She looked at this chart while completing the worksheets.

Christmas Roll & Count Math Games

Need a fun way to help kids develop their number sense and counting skills? This engaging activity will be a hit with them during the festive holiday season! Students will match the number digit they roll with the amount of dots they count on the ornaments found on their recording sheets. They will also trace the number and graph it to see which number reaches the top first!

To prepare:
Print as many recording sheets you need for the set of students in your class. You can use the dice template provided to make the cube or you can use a pocket cube to insert the programmed images into it for an easy and quick setup. I like to laminate the cube inserts so that they remain intact for repeated use but it’s totally up to you if you’d like to do this.

Roll, Count and Trace Ornaments

1. For the first game (Roll & Trace) I instructed the students to roll the cube and then say the number they landed on. They will then count the dots on the ornaments on the graph to find the matching number. They trace it and roll again until one number reaches the top.

2. For the second game (Roll & Cover) the students will roll the cube and cover that many dots on the ornament with buttons or counters. For example, if the student rolls a four they will cover the ornament with four counters or buttons. They continue to do this until all the spots on the ornament have been covered. As a math extension, you can get the student to roll two dice instead and add up their numbers to cover that many spots on the ornament.

Christmas Number Sense Printables

Work on number sense and subitizing with this fun Christmas theme! Clip cards, puzzles, and color by code worksheets all included to work on number sense!

Why Number Sense is Important

Math is a skill that builds upon a foundation. The stronger the foundation, the stronger the math abilities. So it makes sense to ensure younger kids have a strong foundation.

Number sense is the foundation of understanding numbers. Number sense promotes kids to understand what a number is, what it looks like, what it represents, and how to make it multiple ways. It goes beyond the abstract names we have for numbers (like three) and into a deeper understanding (knowing that a group of apples is 3 apples).

How to Use the Christmas Number Sense Printables

There are 3 separate activities in this pack that focus on counting with 10 frames and dots.

1. The first activity is a Color by Ten Frame and Color by Dots set of Christmas photos.

Start by identifying each of the colors that go with the numbers. For kids that are not yet reading, it can be helpful to color the numbers and colors at the bottom of the page. Next, color each section, one at a time, according to the code. When you are done you should have a full Christmas Picture! There are 3 puzzles:
  • Ten frames 1-5
  • Ten frames 6-10
  • Dots 1-5

2. The second activity is a set of Christmas Tree Puzzles.

These puzzles can be printed double-sided. The back side includes the number that matches the puzzle parts on the front. On the top of the trees are the dots and the bottom of the trees are the ten frames. Match each top and bottom based on the total number. There are 10 puzzles total for numbers 1-10.

3. The last activity features ten frame counting clip cards.

Ten frames are most useful when kids can quickly recognize the number represented. Working with 10 frames regularly can help kids to build the recognition. To use the clip cards, identify the number in the ten frame. Then clip the correct number on the right-hand side! There are clip cards for numbers 1 through 10.

This fun set of counting cards make a great Winter themed math activity for preschoolers!

Materials Needed:
Laminate the cards for durability. Kids can count the number of marshmallows on each card if they do not recognize the number, then they place the correct amount of playdough balls in the ten frame. They can also trace the number on the left side with playdough.

Another option is to trace the number with a dry-erase marker, and use something else inside the ten frame, such as pom poms or marshmallows!

Valentine's Day Addition Clip Cards

Clip cards are a great way to practice basic addition or subtraction facts. There’s an added mystery element to them that make them fun and interactive for kids who are developing their number and addition skills. You can also make these cards self-correcting cards by placing a colored dot sticker at the back so they can clip and check. They are so much fun!

Print as many cards as you will need for your group of students. Preferable print on cardstock then laminate and cut them up. There are 36 cards in the set. You can totally differentiate the cards according to the students’ abilities. Keep the addition to five or ten in one set and use them accordingly.

Valentine’s Day Addition Clip Cards

Clip cards make a fun math activity and a great way to start working on addition skills. The cards have the equation at the top and then three number choices at the bottom. There are four cards per page to make it easier on printing and setting up. Start by getting the kids to work on one card at a time. I like placing dot stickers at the back of each card for an easy self-correcting task. I find that sometimes, the kids will look for the stickers at the back though so make sure that they don’t particularly know this until they’ve clipped all their cards. 😉

With these cards, you can totally use manipulatives like math unifix cubes or counters to have the kids show their numbers at the top with each card as they clip. Get the kids to have each number in the equation in a certain color. This definitely helps the kids visualise the equation in their minds as they work out their answer.

Valentine's Day Number Sense Games

We are deep in the throes of winter, and we're starting to look forward to Valentine's Day. If you're looking forward to Valentine's Day with your tots and preschoolers, I've got a great activity for you to add to your math center.

re starting to look forward to Valentine Valentine's Day Number Sense Games

Valentine's Day Numbers Game

This no-prep activity is perfect for your homeschool preschool activities. All you need to do is print the pages out. Then, your preschoolers are ready for some Valentine's Day math fun.

How to Use the Pages

I suggest printing the pages on cardstock and laminating for durability. There are six different number boards to choose from. If you have children at various learning levels, they can play the game together using different number boards. Or, you can have your child progress through each board as they become more comfortable with numbers and counting from one to six. Have students roll a die and count the dots. Then, using a counter (mini erasers, buttons, Valentine's Day conversation hearts), identify the correct number on the game board.

What's Included

The Valentine's Day number game boards vary in difficulty and skill. On the six game boards, you'll find the following:
  • standard numerals
  • colorful number clipart
  • dot patterns
  • counting fingers
  • tally marks
  • ten frames
Choose the one that best fits your child's needs, and have fun! This can be played independently or in pairs. If a pair of kids is playing, the first child to cover four squares in a row is the winner.
