Learning with rainbows and rainbow colors makes any counting activity more fun and inviting. We used colorful pompoms as counting manipulatives here, but one can use buttons, mini erasers, even candy like M&M's or Skittles!
How to set up this rainbow counting activity
You will need:- The free printable cards (link at bottom of post)
- Rainbow color manipulatives
- Numbers (we used craft foam ones here)
- Rainbow color containers (optional but nice to have)
How to play and learn
The aim of this activity is to let young children explore numbers and counting from 1 to 10. You will see there are also two blank cards if you wish to add other numbers too. This will depend on the age and ability of the child.
- Simply count out numbers using the manipulatives. This not only works on counting, one-on-one correspondence, but fine motor skills too!
- Find the correct number (this develops visual discrimination).
- Compare numbers by looking at the pompoms and seeing hands-on which card has the most/least. Talk about these concepts to develop language and vocabulary.
- Place the number cards in order, from 1 to 10. Count forwards and backwards.
